Jhaelryna's red eyes glow when they reflect firelight, like embers in deep night, and with her gray complexion, the effect lends her the monstrous impression of a full drow. And so to pass among strangers, she keeps her countenance well-hidden when not confined to the cloistered life within the stacks and cabinets of the academe that she's chosen. Nevertheless, Jhaelryna was quick to reveal herself to her "cohort" at Moonreach, but then, disguises do seem contrary to her staid, precise nature.
She has the typical slim and androgynous build of an elf, slightly smaller than the average moon elf of the surface. She wears an ever-serious expression: few have seen her smile, and fewer still can recall hearing her laugh. Despite this chilly and inexpressive demeanor, she's quick to offer a measure of kindness or optimism, which seem genuine even when rendered in the pedantic, erudite register of her conversation.
Reputation & Background
Just before the Zhentarim invasion, Jhaelryna was named an associate instructor of illusion at Spellweaver Keep, her alma mater, before she then traveled to Moonreach. Though she admits her thesis is incomplete, she bristles at being treated like a student, and she's confided to Locus Operandi that her true task was a Mystran mission to uncover the truth of the 'occult' allegations against Moonreach and Peltarch's Golden Geese. Jhaelryna openly regards the factionalism of Moonreach and the goals of the Cleimants with skepticism, and she's adopted a brusque and candid response that doesn't do her favors politically.
Publicly, she's alluded to being a native of the Narfell region, with memories of Peltarch's senate and a colder climate. Few at Moonreach will know the details, but she was a secret student of former Keeper and Phoenix member Genzir Malark. Like him, she left Narfell around the time of the N'Jast war. She spent the intervening decades working in various libraries of the arcane. Her life before Spellweaver is a story even fewer know.
Granthim

Jhaelryna's familiar is an imp named Granthim. The fiendling, prone to obsequious grovelling, appears to have his own motivations---if not the directives of the higher devil who bound him to Jhaelryna at the request of the Matron of House Desptyl.
